Lightning Protection in Portland & the South Coast, Maine — Historic & Coastal Homes

Maine’s #1 Lightning Protection Contractor

Expert Lightning Protection ServiceSince 1950

Portland and the Casco Bay shore towns face the Atlantic head-on: summer thunderstorms build over the Gulf of Maine and come ashore at full strength, and the shore is flat for miles — so every chimney, cupola, and ridgeline from the West End to Cape Elizabeth, Scarborough, and Falmouth is the tallest point around. We protect the whole property: main house, guest house, barns, and shops, every building covered.

Lightning Protection in Portland & the South Coast

From Portland’s West End and Munjoy Hill through South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, and Scarborough to Falmouth, Yarmouth, and the Brunswick shore, the South Coast mixes irreplaceable historic homes with shore and summer properties. The exposure is the ocean itself: storms build over the Gulf of Maine and come ashore unbroken, and on flat shore ground there is nothing taller than the buildings. A strike to a chimney or ridgeline can tear masonry, ignite framing, and send destructive current through every circuit in the house — in a nineteenth-century Portland home, that loss can’t be rebuilt.

WB Lightning Rods protects South Coast properties the way we’ve protected fine homes since 1950: low-profile systems designed around the architecture — discreet on historic homes — heavy conductor cables routed cleanly along rooflines and downspout lines, and grounding designed for shore soils and the granite ledge that runs under much of the coast. The whole property is designed into the plan — main house, guest houses, barns, and shops. Every system is installed by our experienced crew and personally supervised by the owner.

Storms Come Off the Ocean at Full Strength

Thunderstorms that build over the Gulf of Maine arrive over shore roofs with no land to weaken them. On the coast, the tallest structure on the lot is where lightning lands.

Historic Homes Can’t Be Replaced

Portland’s older homes carry old-growth timber, historic masonry, and details no modern build reproduces. A discreet, properly grounded system protects the fabric of the house without changing how it looks.

Pines and Oaks Over Every Roof

Tall pines and oaks tower over rooftops in every South Coast neighborhood. Trees and rooflines share the strike zone — a designed system covers both.

What We Protect

One company for the whole property — historic homes, coastal homes, farmhouses, barns, and shops, anywhere along the South Coast.

Residential Homes

Complete lightning rod systems for houses of every size, designed around your roofline — the work WB has done since 1950.

Custom & Historic Homes

Discreet, low-profile systems for historic Portland homes and fine shore properties — clean runs that respect the architecture, dormers, and rooflines.

Farmhouses & Historic Homes

Discreet, low-profile systems for older farmhouses and historic homes — clean runs along rooflines and downspout lines, protection you have to look for to see.

Horse Farms & Equestrian Properties

Barns, stables, and arenas protected along with the residence — horses, hay, and tack, all covered.

Barns & Pole Barns

Agricultural buildings, equipment shops, and hay storage — the tallest structures on the farm, and the ones lightning finds first.

Lifetime Protection

We protect all of your buildings — main house, guest houses, barns, shops, and outbuildings — with a lifetime of protection. Multi-building packages price the whole property together, so protecting everything costs less than protecting buildings one at a time.

Lightning Protection for Trees

Mature oaks, maples, and specimen trees protected with their own terminals and grounding, so a shade tree never becomes the strike path to your roof.

Neighborhood Multi-Home Packages

Neighbors who install together save together — neighborhood discounts on multi-home packages for your street, road, or lake shore.

Inspections & Repairs

Complete installations and repairs — that’s the work. Already have a system? We inspect it, repair storm damage and wear, and bring older installations up to current NFPA 780 standards. We make old systems great again.

New Construction

Building new? We design and install protection while the home or barn is going up — cleaner cable runs, nothing retrofitted after the fact.

A Complete Portland & South Coast System

Every WB system is built to NFPA 780 guidelines using UL-listed materials made in the USA — and designed for the South Coast specifically, not copied from a template.

Air Terminals

Placed along rooflines, chimneys, cupolas, barn ridgelines, and dormers — the high points lightning seeks first on South Coast properties.

Conductors

Heavy conductor cables routed cleanly along rooflines and downspout lines, carrying strike energy safely down and away from the structure.

Grounding

Deep-driven ground rods at each structure, designed for coastal soils — and where granite ledge sits near the surface, grounding is engineered for the ledge — so strike energy disperses safely into the earth.

Bonding

Metal roofing, gutters, water lines, and electrical services bonded to the protection system, so stray current can’t side-flash between metal parts.

Outbuilding Coverage

Guest houses, barns, pole barns, equipment shops, and garages incorporated into the property plan — no building left exposed.

Whole-Property Packages, From the West End to the Shore Roads

A South Coast property is often more than the house. Our multi-building packages price the whole property as one design — main house, guest house, barns, shops, and garages, all protected — which costs less than protecting buildings one at a time and leaves no gap between them. Well pumps, pool equipment, and HVAC all ride the same electrical service, and the design accounts for every one of them.

The same thinking applies street by street. Neighbors on the same street or shore road who install together earn neighborhood discounts on multi-home packages, and because WB serves all of Maine statewide, a Portland home and a second property Down East or at the lake are one call, one company. Many quotes are built from satellite imagery, so the process can start with one call.

Our Work on Fine Homes

Portland & South Coast Lightning Protection Questions

Will a lightning protection system change how my historic home looks?

Very little, when it’s designed properly. We use low-profile terminals and route heavy conductor cables cleanly along rooflines and downspout lines, following the architecture instead of fighting it. On most Portland homes, visitors never notice the system until it’s pointed out — but it is working every storm.

Can lightning damage my home without hitting it directly?

Yes. A strike to a nearby tree, a fence, or utility lines down the road can send a damaging surge through wiring, well pumps, pool equipment, and electronics. That’s why grounding and bonding matter as much as the terminals on the roof: a properly grounded system gives strike energy a direct, controlled path to earth at the structure itself.

Do you protect guest houses, barns, and shops too?

Yes — and we recommend it. Every structure on the property is designed into one plan: main house, guest house, barns, and shops, each with its own terminals, conductors, and grounding, priced together as a property package.

Do neighbors save if we install together?

Yes. When several homes on the same street or shore road install in the same trip, everyone shares the travel and setup — and we pass that saving on as a neighborhood discount on multi-home packages. It’s the most affordable way to protect a whole street, and it only takes one organizer to get it started.

What about the tall pines shading our house?

A tall pine close to the house can side-flash a strike into the roof, or send current through its roots toward the foundation. We offer lightning protection for trees themselves — their own terminals and grounding — and we factor nearby trees into every property design.

What does a system cost on the South Coast?

Price depends on roof size and complexity, the number of buildings, and grounding conditions. Property packages price multiple buildings together, which brings the per-building cost down. Estimates are free — many are built from satellite imagery of your property — and every system carries a lifetime warranty on parts and labor.
